Monarch Crest
Hands-down, this is the best the Arkansas Valley has to offer. Not only is it critically acclaimed as one of the finest trails in all of Colorado, it's also regarded as one of the best trails in the United States. The quality of the ride and unsurpassed views just can't be beat. Officially, the Monarch Crest Trail is a stretch of the Continental Divide Trail from Monarch Pass to Marshall Pass. Unofficially, the ride also includes any of several descent routes, accessed either from Marshall Pass or from one of the intersecting trails along the way.

One popular myth is the misconception that these rides are entirely downhill. As you will see from the elevation profiles, there will be some climbing, especially on the classic Silver Creek descent route. Don't let that discourage you, however, since the net loss in elevation is much greater than the net gains on almost every option.

Because of this area's popularity, it is especially important to obey the rules of the trail. Please yield to hikers and ride within the trail boundaries. Your behavior on this trail has a great impact on the status of this treasured area.

Also, since much of the Crest trail is above tree line, you'll want to get an early start to avoid getting caught in afternoon storms.
