Poncha Springs
Often referred to as the "Crossroads of the Rockies," Poncha Springs is the gateway to some of the Arkansas Valley's hottest mountain biking. While known to most as simply a shuttle point for the Monarch Crest rides, its close proximity to both the Rainbow Trail and Colorado Trail makes it a noteworthy mountain biking destination of its own.

Salida
There's a reason Salida made Outside magazine's 2004 list of best towns in the United States. The town's proximity to so many world class recreational areas combined with its laidback vibe and unpretentious attitude make it an outdoor paradise. Unlike so many other mountain towns with similar claims, Salida is a place of genuine soul. You won't have to sidestep a parade of Hummers and Porsches when you cross the street, and nobody will look twice if you enter a store with dirt under your fingernails.
A group of committed, hardcore local riders are working hard to establish Salida as Colorado's next big mountain biking destination. The superb new single-track around Tenderfoot Mountain is one example of their work. These locals are some of the friendliest I've encountered anywhere and most are more than happy to share their knowledge and offer direction.
