Yet another high alpine pass to explore in the Leadville area. The majority of this route follows the grade of the Colorado Centennial Midland Railroad and eventually leads to the high pass between the Turquoise Lake Recreation Area in the San Isabel National Forest and the Hunter-Frying Pan Wilderness Area in the White River National Forest. The push to the summit is relatively easy (when compared to other alpine passes), and along the way you'll pass Skinner Hut, part of the 10th Mountain Division hut route between Leadville and Aspen.
One highlight is the optional spur loop that leads to the east portal of the Hagerman Tunnel of the Colorado Centennial Midland Railroad. This fun 5.6-mile route of single-track and double-track is worth the extra hour it takes to complete. Along the way you'll pass Hagerman Lake and the historic Douglass settlement site.
